There are a variety of methods one can use to teach such as Grammar - translation, The Silent Way, Task Based Learning, Presentation Practice and Production, to name a few, but the most effective, according to ittt, is the Engage, Study and Activate method. There are various ways to use this method, an example of the straight arrow ESA lesson is to engage the students in a new topic to get a feel for what they already know and what they need to know, as well as introducing new material. Then move on to the study phase using worksheets and other methods making sure students use correct pronunciation and grammar and to correct mistakes where necessary. Correcting mistakes should be done carefully in order not discourage to discourage, try to stay positive. Students then move on to the Activate stage where they use the new language learnt through role-playing, debates or storytelling etc. Other ESA lessons include the Boomerang or Patchwork lessons.
