It is important for a teacher to provide students with feedback as they learn. It is equally as important for the teacher to assess the student's knowledge and growth over time. This is why evaluation and testing are another vital role in education. In providing continual feedback you are helping students by providing information necessary for them to evaluate themselves and grow. We can evaluate student's knowledge through tests. For example placement tests and diagnostic tests are typically given at the start of a course to show the teacher what their student's working knowledge and level of English are, these can also help the teacher plan for what to teach based on the student's abilities and gaps. Progress tests are given over time throughout the course and help tell the students and teachers which areas need more or less work. In addition to the previously mentioned tests there are practice tests to help prepare students for external exams.
