This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit covers the different ways that teachers can evaluate their students' language abilities, particularly through tests. It also covers the various kinds of external exams that ESL learners might take if they're interested in studying or working in a place where English is the language of communication.
I learned that although tests can sometimes end up being nothing more than a memory test for students (and therefore not a good way to measure how well they actually know the material), if a test is constructed carefully and covers a wide range of topics in all four areas (reading, writing, listening, and speaking), then it can provide a good assessment of students' language abilities. Thus, tests should definitely be used to evaluate students' abilities and progress throughout the course, not only for the teacher's knowledge, but also for the students to be able to measure their level, focus on their weaknesses, and to progress accordingly.
