Unit 3 gives an overview of the various theories, methodologies and techniques commonly involved with teaching English as a second language. It begins by giving an overview of the different methods available, before focusing on the ESA (Engage, Study and Activate) methodology that will be studied throughout this TESOL certificate. The unit defines individual elements of ESA method and offers practical suggestions on how to use these elements.The unit finishes with a suggestions on giving feedback and correcting students.
This unit has helped me have a broader understanding on the different approaches to teaching English as a second language and has given me many ideas on how to conduct my English classes, offering a wide variety of methodologies to apply to my lessons. In particular, the discussion on correction and feedback was particularly helpful as this is a sensitive area that requires experience to gauge the right approach for your students.
