This unit has been extremely helpful to see how a TEFL teacher puts into practice the ESA method and how the class may react. It was interesting to notice how different the participation of the students was in the two cases, depending on the attitude of the teacher.
It is quite obvious that the power of smiling, using body language, naming the students and engaging with all of them throughout the class can determine a totally different outcome of the lesson.This unit provided a helpful summation of common problems ESL teachers encounter and strategies for resolving them. While many of these were, upon reading, fairly intuitive, the reminders that disruptive students are often acting out because of some failure on the part of the teacher, the importance of opening a class with activities that engage the students, and ways teachers can create a more supportive and encouraging learning environment are all valuable.
