This unit discussed testing, tutorials and student evaluations as a formal means of providing a student with feedback. Tutorials can be done with a group of students to review what has been done and how successfully the students completed the tasks set. Student evaluations can determine how students feel about the course, whether it is the right difficulty level, whether there is enough practice in each skill etc. There are a variety of tests for different purposes, such as placement and diagnostic tests at the beginning of a course, periodic progress tests so that both student and teacher can see how the student is tracking, and end of term tests or external examinations to determine final results. Placement tests can feature a range of question types increasing in difficulty in order to assess which areas students are and are not comfortable with. There are a variety of external examinations with varying purposes, including TOEFL, IELTS and TOEIC.
