Unit 13 is about pronunciation and phonology.
Phonology is the science of the physical properties of sounds. It includes the areas of intonation, stress, and rhythm.
Intonation carries the message of the sentence by variation in volume and pitch in the whole sentence. Intonation follows the \"normal\" rise/fall pattern, or fall/rise, or flat pattern. Different techniques are presented for teaching intonation.
Stress in the sentence can turn its interpretation. Stress in words is outlined in two simple rules: one word has only one stress and we can only stress a syllabus, not a vowel. There are techniques for indicating and teaching stress.
Sound joining, linked speech and contrastive stress are the techniques for teaching stress.
In the second part - Pronunciation the phonetic symbols are represented in a downloadable table.
The areas of articulation, manner of articulation, and teaching methods of pronunciation are discussed with examples.
