The two receptive skills are reading and listening, while the two productive skills are writing and speaking. None of the four are more important than the others, and all should be taught in a balanced approach, although some lessons may be suited more for certain skills more than others. There are two sources from which students can work on their receptive skills: authentic reading or listening sources, which are not made with the learner in mind, and graded material, which is content that is tailored to the learning student and ideal for beginners who may not have enough pre-knowledge of the language to be able to digest complicated authentic material. It is always a good idea to pre-teach the important vocabulary before giving students receptive content. This removes some of the learning obstacles for them. However, students must learn to be comfortable extrapolating the main point of the content, even if they aren't able to understand every word.
