In this lesson I learned all about pronunciation and phonology, which are complicated topics. Many find pronunciation difficult to teach and for this reason is likely the most neglected aspect of English language teaching. Phonology is the study of the physical properties of the sounds. Stress is the variation in pitch and volume in a word, whereas intonation of that of an entire sentence. Intonation and stress can indicate many things such as emotion, (dis)agreement, whether or not you want the other person to respond, etc. There a variety of ways that English speakers join together words and sounds and change different sounds when certain words come together in a sentence. This can be hard to learn but essential for the mastery of the language. The lesson next gets into the alphabet of phonetic symbols and where/how different sounds are made by the different parts of the mouth and vocal chords. I found this lesson to be very interesting and valuable.
