This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I learned a teacher has access to two different types of resources to teach. A teacher can identify weaknesses/ strengths and interests of their students to find authentic resources relevant to them. These resources can build confidence if the students can relate to it. Secondly, created materials are a great way to introduce new vocabulary in an interactive manner. This allows the teacher to gauge the students abilities through these activities. This unit taught me a lot about all the different tools I can use as teaching aids in the classroom. It outlined the advantages and disadvantages and also in detail what tools may be suitable to teach the different teaching stages. I have made the mistake of explaining to ESL students the origin of a word in the past and I now know that it is not appropriate to do so in too much detail - maybe only if they are interested in the origin themselves!
