This unit focuses on the Past Tenses of the English language. All of 4 mentioned obviously relate to some past period of time. Past Simple indicates the action, which took place at a definite time in the past. Past Continuous refers to an action that was in progress at a definite time in the past. This tense almost always requires some time reference. Past Perfect represents an action that took place before another action in the past. And Past Perfect Continuous, though rarely used, represents a longer action that had been going on before another past action.
Students usually experience some difficulties in studying complicated tenses like Past Perfect or Past Perfect Continuous. Sometimes they might even confuse or mix up some of the tenses. If the grammatical form is long, students often omit some of the auxiliaries. Hence, teachers should do their best to provide their students with simple and clear explanations to avoid the future mistakes and errors.
