Whether this is important for students is immaterial as it gives a broader understanding to the English language to the teacher. I myself have never learnt phonology and its refreshing and challenging to be presented with a new form of English I was not aware of before. I particularly enjoyed the phonetic transcriptions and having to learn the whole phonetic alphabet was extremely useful.
