Conditionals are sentences containing if or when which refer to the past, present and future possibilities. There are two clauses - 'if' clause and 'main' clause. There are five main conditionals. They are :
1. zero conditionals : if/when + present tense, present tense. This refers to an action that are irrefutable.
2. First conditional: if + present simple, will ( or may, might, can, should, must). This talks about a real situation in the future that is possible, probable or even certain, once the condition has ben satisfied.
3. Second conditional: If + past simple, would/could/might + base form. This communicates a present or future unreal. for example: If I won the election, I would become a minister.
4. Third conditional - If + past perfect, would/could/ might + have, +past perfect. refers to a hypothetical past action. If I had studied well, I would have done better in the exams.
5. Mixed conditional : Second conditional with a third condition.
