The three main categories in teaching a new language are vocabulary, grammar, and functions. To learn the new language, a student must be exposed to it, understand its meaning, know how to construct and use it, and be able to practice it.
In choosing which vocabularies to be taught, criteria include appropriateness to student’s level, task, and application frequency in different situations. On the other hand, for the students to learn the new vocabulary, the student must know its meaning, spelling, pronunciation, and how it is used in a sentence.
In teaching new grammatical structures, students need to know how or when it is used, the forms and patterns of the language, and know the spoken and written form, as well as the differences in both form.
In teaching new language functions, appropriateness to the student’s level is used as the main criteria. Teachers should focus on exercises that will allow students to practice the new language widely.
