This unit presented a general overview of the basic roles expected of a teacher in a classroom environment. Working through the chapter has been helpful for me. The portion of the unit dealing with the classification of students into levels was well put together and provided very useful information. I have not had the opportunity to study that in detail prior to this so I appreciate having the chance to do so. That being said, I am of the opinion that a ridged classification system can cause problems. This is because students may excel in one area of a language such as listening, while struggling to apply what is learned in class to writing or speaking at nominal level of the course. In these cases it seems to me that it is incumbent on the teacher to attempt to build on the successes made by students in one area, while helping the student to apply what they understand as a means of developing the areas in which they are still experiencing difficulties.
