This unit describes the roles and qualities of both the Teacher & Learner in an ESL environment. A teacher should be fair, have a good command of the English language and grammar rules as well as being a kind, patient and motivating teacher. They also need to be able to assess/adapt their teaching/lessons to the level of their students. A learner also has responsibilities in the classroom and some are that they have a willingness to learn and ask questions and a desire to experiment with their own learning style. They should also be willing to accept correction. Adults and young learners come into an ESL environment with different histories and ways of approaching learning which will affect how the teacher runs the class. An ESL class can have differing levels of language ability (Beginning, Elementary, Low/Pre Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced so the teacher needs to be able assess and adapt the lesson plans/teaching styles accordingly.
