This unit focused on English grammar, specifically breaking down and correctly labeling the different parts that comprise a typical English sentence. It covered articles, nouns, verbs, prepositions, etc... Each part of speech could be further broken down into more specific categories. For example, nouns could be further categorized into common, proper, compound, abstract, and collective nouns. Being a native speaker of English, I did not truly understand the complexities involved in properly speaking and writing English until they were pointed out by the unit. For example, when using multiple adverbs in a sentence, students should follow the rule regarding sequencing: place, manner, time. I haven't had the need to utilize any of these types of rules, because I just went by what naturally sounded good. Moreover, the many exceptions to the rules in the English language further illuminated how difficult and frustrating students must find learning the language.
