This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 11 provided me with a deeper understanding of the importance of reading and listening. These two skills are taken for granted as native speakers. This unit helped me understand that when teaching a class of non english speakers, heir reading and listening skills will be different from mine. They will not come into the class having the knowledge and background I have. For this reason concepts and lessons must be broken down through the ESA stages, explained throughly, and demonstrated for them to be able to effectively communicate back what they've learned.Even though this unit is very familiar to me due to my current work as class teacher, it pointed out some very important things regarding classroom management. It is as important to be able to organize classroom activities and manage the class as it is to know the subject matter of what you are teaching. Behavior problems are very common but they can be solved rather easily as long as the teacher maintains his/hers temper and is ready to build a trustworthy relationship with the students. Collegial support and following the school guidelines are also important.
