Unit 13 provides a brief overview of the complex topic of pronunciation and phonology. This unit lays down general guidelines for English pronunciation, including an introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet, to enable students to achieve accuracy and clarity in their spoken communication. The unit also covers teaching techniques and classroom activities that support students in gaining an understanding of English pronunciation.
The basic concepts provided in this unit gave me the confidence to extend my personal knowledge of the subject of pronunciation by further reading. This unit also increased my awareness of certain features of the English language that I use subconsciously, such as stress, rhythm, and intonation. I developed an appreciation for the difficulty of teaching pronunciation, particularly when I learnt about sound joining and linked speech, and also because the spelling of English words frequently differs from their pronunciation.
