This unit taught me how to teach receptive skills. Although it was short, it contained a lot of valuable information about how to get students motivated for reading and listening practice. From my experience in Japan it is quite difficult to engage students in reading and/or listening exercises, so to learn how to create and maintain interest for these types of activities. The model ESA lesson on Elvis was particularly helpful in this regard.I have been through teacher training before so much of this section was review for me. However, it was useful to read about different ways of organizing group or pair activities and the advantages and disadvantages of each. It is a common trap for teachers to fall into giving lectures and not mixing up the lesson structure to include lots of student-to-student interactions so it is helpful to be reminded of ways to increase student talk time.
