This unit discusses the pros and cons of course materials. There are some advantages to using course books, but a teacher shouldn't stick exclusively to a book. Sometimes books aren't as up to date and topical, sometimes the design is poorly suited, sometimes a teacher depends less on her own creativity. Also, a book must be selected carefully based on the students level. Books may be expensive or may not be readily available, especially in countries where I may be teaching TEFL. Some teachers may be able to use their artistic skills; others will rely on pictures or other carefully selected things that fit the topic. There are advantages to Authentic Materials as well, such as newspaper articles, menus, recordings, etc. Any course book may be supplemented by these materials depending on what fits the specific group being taught.
