Both language concepts of conditionals and reported speech are advanced level grammatical structures that can, if not approached by the teacher in a slow and patient manner, can cause students confusion in both usage and form. For the conditional, there are 5 main types of this structure: Zero, First, Second, Third, and Mixed. Each form contains and if clause that has to be true for the entire sentence to become true, while the main clause expressed the possible consequence. In considering reported speech, teachers help students to be aware of how each part of speech must change in order to correctly form sentences explaining indirect speech, including changes in verb tense (generally present to past), pronouns (who is being spoken to) and time expressions (when the conversation took place, when the actions take/took place). There are many interesting and communicative activities that can be created for students to form and practice these grammatical concepts.
