Unit 12 tells us about the peculiarities of teaching productive skills (Speaking and Writing). Both of them are of equal importance, though, writing is usually the most neglected skill as it takes a lot of time during the lesson. So, to avoid this ‘quiet’ time, teachers leave writing practice for homework. The purpose of speaking as well as writing is communication. To achieve the effective result, 2 types of activities are applies: accuracy activities (on the Study phase), fluency (on the Activate stage).
Speaking activities can be controlled (e.g. drilling), guided (accuracy based but a bit more creative), creative communication (e.g. discussions, information gaps, simulations). Communicative games are also frequently used in class. They are of different kinds: 1) competitive and 2) cooperative. Another subdivision is 1) communicative and 2) linguistic.
When teaching writing, we should take into account handwriting, spelling, punctuation and layout.
