This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit reviews the teaching of pronunciation, including how stress is used in English, how the sound of words change based on context and the flow of speech, and how sounds are actually produced. Stress can be difficult to teach both because it can be difficult to pick out intentionally and because it carries lots of meaning that most native speakers do not even think about. In addition, trying to explain contextual changes can be quite confusing, especially when students learn the 'proper' grammar - for example, if a student has learned 'I want to', then hearing 'I wanna' might not make sense if the teacher does not cover it. Finally, the section covering IPA is useful as a tool to think about words based on sound rather than spelling, which in English is rarely phonetic. As each IPA symbol has a specific way to be produced, it can help a teacher demonstrate how to physically make a sound which might be uncommon or not present in a student's native language.
