Unit 12 covers the productive language skills of speaking and writing, as well as complications of and considerations for teaching these skills in an EFL classroom. Speaking and writing are compared, with the overall purpose of effective communication highlighted throughout. The different types of activities designed to work on speaking and writing are described, and further differentiated by a primary focus on either accuracy or fluency of the language produced. Much of the unit is also focused on considering ways to encourage interest and participation in students in the face of reluctance and difficulty. This unit provided many suggestions of activities and techniques for engaging students, but also for designing and enacting lesson plans with clearly-defined goals and ways to achieve them. I have experienced the student side of this in learning a second language, but obtained a better understanding of the requirements of teaching these skills from this unit.
