Summary
The key objective of this unit was about how to teach productive skills (speaking and writing). First I learnt the differences between fluency and accuracy and how they are of equal importance in language development. Then I was presented with a variety of techniques and activities to encourage students to speak and interact during the lesson and this also included guidelines for a free/creative speaking activity.
Secondly I learnt that writing skills such as handwriting should be encouraged especially if the alphabetical system is different from English. Spelling is incredibly important and challenging as incorrect spelling or grammar can be misunderstood and seen as sign of poor education. One of the challenges in learning English is that it is not a phonetic language, for example single sounds can be written differently (wood/would) and this is not helped by the spelling difference prevalent in British English and American English (favour/favor).
