This unit covers some potential difficulties teachers will face. First is meeting a new class. A teacher should use their first lesson to establish a rapport with the students, as well as an understanding of their level, motivations, and expectations. Next are classes with students at a wide range a language level, in which case a teacher may want to take steps to make sure all students are comfortable within the class. Third are large classes, in which it can be difficult for a teacher to manage the class. If there is confusion, the teacher is not able to assist a student at a particular time, or if a student is simply hesitant to learn English, there may be use of the students' first language in the classroom, but the teacher should encourage as much use of English as possible, even reluctant students. Finally, if there are tasks like listening texts which students finish at a wide variety of times, the teacher still needs to use them, but to address the problem.
