Unit 12 discusses the productive skill of a language, which is Writing and Speaking. Writing is usually the least focused skill because most students want to focus on speaking, however, writing is just as important as speaking. For both writing and speaking it is important that the teacher creates motivation and interest for the students to learn and to do exercises.
Accuracy and Fluency exercises were emphasized. Drilling and prompting questions and answers are the most controlled way of teaching accuracy. Model dialouges and Guided role-play are also focused on the accurate use of the language, however it allows for a little bit of creativity for the student. Fluency-based exercises allow for complete freedom of the student to be creative with the language. Examples of fluency exercises include: free-role play, discussions, information gap group exercises, debates, simulations and communication games.
Accuracy and Fluency are considered equally important.
