This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Pronunciation and phonology is the subject of unit 13. The first portion of the unit focuses on intonation and stress. Firstly, intonation patterns explanations together with examples are given. Then, the concept of stressed and unstressed words within sentences is explored. Examples are given together with rules on how words are generally stressed. Techniques for teaching both intonation and stress are discussed. Subsequently, the phonemic alphabet and phonemic symbols are introduced: in my opinion, this section on the unit is particularly beneficial, as it teaches students how to concentrate on the sounds that are being made when a word is pronounced, rather than only on its spelling. Further, it has been extremely formative learning how sounds are produced: I believe that knowing which articulations are interested in the formation of sounds, and in which manner they are used is fundamental in understanding, and hence teaching the correct pronunciation of sounds.
