In this unit, I have learned about the pronunciation and phonology of English words, including the importance of teaching students pronunciation (which may be the most ignored facet of teaching ESL) and how to teach students the intonation of sentences. For teaching students the intonation of sentences, it may be helpful to use nonsense words, gestures, written stress symbols on the board, and singing/humming to practice adding stress to the emphasized part or parts of the sentence. For teaching students about how to place stress on individual words, using gesture, chanting/singing in rhythm, using the board to write stress marks, and contrasting the stress of words may be beneficial to students. There are different methods for deciding when to teach pronunciation, which include slotting it into a lesson with different learning objectives, devoting a whole lesson to teaching pronunciation, and teaching it only as and when the teacher perceives that the need arises.
