This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The topics of this unit are a phonology in the English language, how and when we should teach pronunciation, and the international phonetic alphabet. Like most people, I learned English phonology just by getting exposed to the language on an everyday basis and not by studying some obscure phonological rules. I also until this day had no idea how to use the phonetic alphabet, so there were a ton of new information for me. I do not think that pronunciation and phonological rules should be prioritized in English lessons as it will come naturally to students over time, but rather addressed when the need arises. Especially in this day and age when students can listen to the correct pronunciation of every word online just by clicking a few buttons on their smartphones. Still, I think teaching the most common rules and principles of phonology is a good idea as it will bring students some sense of structure and hopefully will boost their confidence in their speaking skills.
