Unit 16 covers conditionals and reported speech.
Conditionals are sentences with if (or similar expressions such as 'when')referring to past, present or future possibilities, and a main clause. Either the if-sentence or the main clause can form the first part of a conditional sentence. Conditionals come in five different forms depending on the general message or the verb tense (zero conditional, first -, second -, and third conditional as well as mixed conditionals).
After stating typical areas for students' mistakes, we learn about teaching ideas for conditionals before moving on to reported and direct speech.
When direct speech is transformed into indirect or reported speech, several changes are being made to the parts of speech in any sentence: the subject, the verb tense, the pronoun, the time expressions and the punctuation. We are given several examples to explain the above, as well as ideas on how to best teach this 'minefield of grammar' to our students.
