This unit gives an overview of phonology, the study of the physical properties of sounds. Phonology is concerned with the stress, articulation, and intonation of words and sentences. The difference between stress and intonation is that while stress is considered specific to an individual word, intonation often applies to a full sentence. Stress is rather powerful in the way it can change the entire meaning of a sentence simply by changing which word is being stressed. Intonation functions similarly by carrying the overall feeling/message of the sentence (whether agreeing, disagreeing, expecting a response, speaking with finality, etc.). The section on articulation in this unit was entirely new and unfamiliar to me. I feel like I need to read it through a few more times because, as someone who speaks English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, I am extremely curious as to how these different parts of our mouths that are at work in speaking. This was an extremely eye-opening unit!
