This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit was a good introduction of intonation, stress, and phonology in English, and a few tips on how to teach these sounds to students learning English. There are two basic types of intonation: Rise/fall intonation, which is the \"normal\" pattern and is used to signal the speaker is finished speaking, and fall/rise intonation, which is used to signal either that the speaker isn't done speaking or that he is waiting for a reply. Another part of the unit focused on the international phonetic alphabet, which is a way of spelling out the pronunciation of English words, since English is not a phonetic language. This means that when English is read, it is not possible to determine what the pronunciation of the word is simply based on its spelling. Students must memorize the pronunciation of the English words they learn, so it is important for me as a teacher to become familiar with IPA so that I can use it to help students learn the different kinds of sounds in English.
