Unit 1 was a basic overview of the relationships between teachers and students and the desirable qualities of each. I found the unit helpful because there are traits we instinctively know are desirable in both teachers and learners, but seldom have a reason to identify them specifically. Especially helpful was the list of desirable traits in a teacher, since these are obviously more under my own control then the qualities of any students I may happen to be teaching. Indeed, from my own experience learning a second language, I appreciate how important it is for the teacher to engage every student in the class in order to include even the more shy individuals and for everyone to have a chance to talk. I also look forward to having a chance to be a motivator and to learn from anyone I may have the privilege to teach. However, I feel I will be challenged in assessing students' proficiency levels and adapting lessons in order for them to be appropriate for everyone present.
