Unit 3 covered EFL methodologies and introduced, explained, and analyzed the benefits and drawbacks of popular teaching methodologies. It is important for teachers to understand various methodologies so they can utilize different methods for different teaching points as appropriate. The unit suggested new teachers use the ESA model for their first lessons as this is a flexible method that can be made appropriate for any language point and any level of English. The ESA model begins with the Engage stage, where the teacher gets the students’ energy up and encourages them to think and speak in English. The second stage is Study, where the teacher introduces new language and assigns tasks that will reinforce learning this new language. ESA’s final stage is Activate where students use any English they know freely to complete various activities. This method has proven effective for students’ learning and retention and easy for teachers to create and implement.
