To teach successfully, a teacher of ESL must understand the characteristics which make both successful teachers and successful students, as well as the different needs of students of different ages and language levels. If a teacher is kind, patient, and approachable and makes an effort to keep classes lively and entertaining for students, students are more likely to be attentive and willing to engage with the lesson. A teacher who genuinely enjoys teaching and cares about the learning of their students will encourage students to become comfortable with the language they are learning and allow them to make progress more easily. To that end, a teacher must understand the different roles they play in the classroom, and play them well. By being patient with students as they struggle, knowing when to prompt them when they are stuck, and correcting them gently when they make mistakes, a teacher can ensure that their students feel able to take risks and make mistakes in class.
