Any language has four basic skills. Two of those skills are receptive. These receptive skills include listening and reading. There are two ways to use receptive skills. These include for purpose and for entertainment. Additionally, there are different ways to use receptive skills. Specialist skills associated with reading include predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming the text to try and obtain a general idea of the work, reading to understand everything in detail, and deducing information from context given in the text. FInally, The choice of topic is very important because it can impact if the readers are engaged and if they learn from the material. Teachers can generate interest in the topic by pre-teaching the material to the class and choosing topics that naturally interest the students. Additionally, the teacher can vary topics so that all the students eventually are reading and listening to material that is specifically interesting to them.
