This unit gave an overview of the productive language skills (i.e. speaking and writing), and how to teach these skills. Productive skills are essential for learning to communicate in a new language, and this unit offered helpful examples and descriptions of how to teach writing and speaking to students of all levels. One important distinction in this arena is that between accuracy and fluency activities. Accuracy activities are focused on producing correct language, and are generally categorized as \"controlled activities.\" Fluency activities, on the other hand, are focused on allowing student experimentation and creativity in forming language, getting at effectiveness and flow rather than pure accuracy through generative exercises. The sample Engage-Study-Activate lessons also provide specific examples of accuracy and fluency activities in action, lending a framework to future lesson planning and a clearer picture of how to encourage students in learning productive skills.
