This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit describes the challenging topic of conditional statements, which consist of a subordinate clause generally beginning with 'if'and an independent clause, and reported speech, which is a restatement of what someone else has said. Before completing this unit, I had never learned the formal descriptions of different conditionals or the formal rules of reported speech. This made answering some of the test questions a challenge since we sometimes use reported speech incorrectly in conversation in the United States. For example, the average American would say \"Jane said she went to Italy last week,\" and the answer that best follows the rules of reported speech, \"Jane said that she had gone to Italy the week before,\" seems unnatural. So, this unit was an important lesson for me personally as it showed that I cannot assume that what sounds natural is necessarily correct. Instead, I should carefully review these rules and others in order to teach ELL students effectively.
