The main takeaways from this unit were the qualities that make a good teacher and the many roles a teacher may undertake during the course of a lesson. I completely agree with the qualities of a good teacher and believe that a good teacher is one that strives to offer the best possible lesson while keeping the students engaged and motivated. Second Language Acquisition research shows that, in a given English classroom, there are countless variables, such as the psychology of the students (i.e. individual differences that affect learners' abilities to acquire a language), that lie outside of the teacher's control. Research can point teachers in a general direction as to how to overcome some of these variables, but there will never be a foolproof method to teach an EFL/ESL class that ensures complete acquisition. Therefore, I think teachers should continue to grow pedagogically through peer groups and/or organizations (i.e. JALT) that specialize in specific learner demographics.
