Evaluation and Testing are inevitable parts of the teaching process and it is the topic of unit 15. The unit provides us with names and purposes of different external examinations taken by English learners, for instance, TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC etc. as well as some Cambridge exams, like KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE (on general English), BEC, BULATS (on business English), and Skills for life needed by the immigrants who have moved to Britain.
In the classroom evaluation and testing should not be neglected as well. It can be done in the form of tutorials or various kinds of tests. Before commencing a course, students are usually asked to take placement and diagnostic tests (to grade their language level and to identify their strengths and weaknesses). Progress tests are used periodically to see what language items require more attention.
At the end of the course, teachers might give an achievement test to his/her students in order to see the result they have achieved during the studying.
