Four past tense forms were explained - past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous. Each form has specific rules for usage and specific forms. Past simple refers to past actions when time is given, when time is questioned, and when an action definitely took place. These can be activate in class with card games, CV exercises, and discussing the past. Past continuous refers to interrupted past actions, to indicate a gradual development in the past, to express an action that began before that time and may have continued after it. These can be activated in class using a detective game or use of a journal. Past perfect is always used with 'had' + past participle, which can be tested in class with story telling with use of other tenses, or situational discussions. Past perfect continuous refers to situations that had been going on up to the past moment that is being raised, which can be activated in class by separating sentences and matching them together.
