Writing and speaking make up the productive skills of teaching and while writing is typically the more neglected of the productive teaching skills its importance can not be forgotten. The reasons for the neglect lie in teachers not wanting the required \"quiet time\" in class to perform the activity. Typical ESA methodology in productive skill teaching relies on the straight arrow method. Teaching speaking skills requires the teacher to maintain both controlled and guided activities as well as encouraging the students to communicate in the class. Lack of confidence or interest may hinder this process and should be countered with pair or group-work and careful planning. Teaching writing skills face a number of challenges including differences in American and British spelling, and the students' native country not using the alphabet. Focus in this area is around handwriting, spelling, punctuation and creative writing. Improvement in this area can be made through extensive reading.
