This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The content of this unit is about teaching pronunciation and phonology. It covers information about the use of intonation and stress to emphasis speech, phonemic symbols and articulation (the speech organs). I have learned about intonation patterns and about what they mean. For example, the normal pattern of intonation in a statement is the rise/fall intonation and the fall/rise intonation indicates surprise and that the speaker wants a response. Stress is used to emphasize words and I have learned that we can only stress syllables and not individual vowels or consonants. When a word has more than two syllables, one syllable will receive more importance than the others when it is pronounced. The introduction of phonemic symbols has been very interesting and is surely a good tool for teaching pronunciation of new words to students. Human speech is a complex area of study and the unit shows a good overview of all the speech organs and the exact place of articulation during speech.
