Unit one looks at the characteristics, functions and responsibilities of both the teachers and students in the classroom.
It talks on the qualities of a good teacher and how these qualities will empower the teacher to better understand, manage and educate the young and adult learners of English.
I have also learned that besides having certain qualities, the part played by the teacher in the classroom is also very important. This is because at times, the teacher may have to take part (participate) in class activities, tutor; facilitate etc, depending on the type of activity and he/she wishes the students to achieve.
This unit also introduces us to the learners of English and the various factors such as age, background, language level and motivation that come in to play in their learning process and assimilation. The cultural background of learners of English usually influences their learning capabilities as such student’s motivation in learning a language is very important.
