As an ESL tutor, one has to identify various teaching groups inorder to provide quality teaching experience. There are several types of learners;
the absolute beginner, students who have no English background learning.
false beginner, who have been exposed to English but did not retain much of the language.
the adult learner, beginners who often make their own decisions to learn English and are highly motivated to learn.
the young beginner, young students who lack motivation to learn the language because they see no benefit in learning a new language.
In teaching any of these groups, classes may be a 1-1 setting (teacher and student) or in a group (whether it is children, teenagers or adults) the tutor must understand the motivation and interests of their student(s) and what are the expectations from learning from a new language. Several techniques can be used to effect proper teaching outcomes. Such techniques can be coursebooks, presentations, group work, needs analysis, etc.
