Past tenses are not too different from the structure of present tenses but one must be mindful of what is exactly happening in the past to use the correct tense form. I didn't realize how many irregular verbs there are in the past simple form (so many) and it is only through memorization and practice that they can be acquired knowledge because there are no set rules on how they came to be irregular.
Past continuous, or actions in progress t a time in the past, are used mostly for descriptions, and usually need some form of time reference. Past perfect are actions that have occurred before other actions in the past. Past perfect continuous are considered ongoing actions before a specific action in the past.
As a native English speaker, it is natural for me to use these tenses seamlessly, but actually breaking down the forms and structure to be able to teach this to a non-native speaker has allowed me to be more aware of my language and how and why we form sentences the way we do.
