This unit covers some of the common problem situations a teacher is likely to encounter in his/her teaching career. Every teacher will have the a first lesson with a class, and in the first lesson the course book should not be used, but instead try to build rapport and find out more about the students' interests and abilities. Warmers and games could be used to help establish rapport both amongst students and between teacher and the class. It is inevitable that there will be stronger and weaker students in a class and it is helpful to pair stronger ones with weaker ones, at the same time maker sure the stronger ones do not dominate and do all the work. With large classes it is still important to involve all students, worksheets should be used and pair or group work can maximise student involvement. Use of English should be encouraged in all parts of the lesson, therefore make sure to explain instructions clearly to the students, and only respond to them when they are using English.
