Unit 1 was composed of a series of reflections on the roles and characteristics appropriate to teachers and learners. It argued persuasively that teachers will be most effective when they are motivated chiefly by concern for the success of their students. It also helpfully delineated the roles that a teacher might be expected to fill in the classroom, which range from the very teacher-centered (\"Manager\") to the very student-centered (\"Facilitator\"). A good teacher must be able to negotiate these roles with flexibility, and with sensitivity to the particulars of each classroom. The characteristics of a good learner were also considered, with emphasis upon the centrality of openness and self-motivation. It is essential that teachers work to foster such traits in their students. Factors such as age and cultural background also play a role in shaping the learner's experience, and teachers must be able to account for such factors when desinging lessons and interacting with students.
